Nanshan 120 sqm School-District Home
A 120 sqm four-bedroom school-district home in central Nanshan, Shenzhen, designed for a returning client whose two children were entering new stages of school life.

- Haiyin Changcheng, Nanshan, Shenzhen

Design concept
The project continues QI Design’s focus on real family needs. Rather than applying a fixed style, the design responds to the family’s routines and avoids unnecessary gestures. An entry cloakroom, a separate storage room, a family study area, a shorter dining-kitchen route, and two children’s rooms are reorganized into a practical long-term living system.

Project Background
The owner is a returning client of QI Design. Her first apartment was also designed by the practice, and she chose to work with the team again after moving. Three years later, with two children entering primary school and kindergarten, the family needed better study areas, storage, and independent rooms for the children.
Design Focus
The design puts function before surface style. An entry cloakroom increases storage and keeps occasional clutter out of the living room view. A separate storage room gives cleaning tools, household supplies, and miscellaneous items a defined place.
Shared Area
The living room keeps the advantage of a low-floor view toward greenery, and introduces an independent study area into the shared family space. The dining table and kitchen bar shorten daily chores and create more opportunities for communication and companionship.
Kitchen and Dining
The kitchen uses a U-shaped layout, with a double-door refrigerator and generous worktop space. Instead of forcing a standard appliance list, the design follows the family’s actual preference for a disinfection cabinet rather than a dishwasher.
Children’s Rooms
The daughter’s room uses soft pink tones for a bright and gentle atmosphere, while the son’s room responds to a more energetic imagination. Both children are given clearer areas for study, sleep, and storage as they grow into different school stages.
